Sergio Guerra, Dean of Law School, and Evandro Menezes de Carvalho, Director of Brazil-China Research Center, of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) Rio de Janeiro, a renowned Brazilian think-tank, paid a visit to our school on the morning of September 5, 2019. Gao Huanyue,Deputy Secretary ofthePartyCommittee ofChina University of Political Science and Law (“CUPL”), met with theguests. Dean oftheSchool of Juris Master XU Shenjian, Party Secretary HAN Wensheng, Deputy Chief of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange LuYong andothersalso attended the meeting and heldaconversation with theguests.
GAO Huanyue gave a warm welcome to the first visit of Guerra. She introduced to the guests school characteristics, talent cultivation, scientific research, international cooperation, as well as discipline distribution, professional advantages, the number of teachers and students, and the excellent performance of CUPL alumni inpolitical, legal andbusinesscircles. When talking about the academic status and achievements of CUPL, GAO highlighted the hopes for CUPL pinned by Chinese President XI Jinping and other major leaders of China as well as numerous distinctions acquired by CPUL, such as “The Highest Institution of Law Education in China”, sinceitsestablishment. She said since the establishment of partnership between CUPL and FGV in 2013, the two sides have conducted practical, effective cooperation in terms of scholar exchange, short-term teaching and through Law Schools Global League. She hoped both sides could further strengthen cooperation in talent cultivation and research on frontier social issues, especially issues related to the Belt and Road Initiative. Meanwhile, GAO welcomed more teachers and students from FGV to CUPL for exchange and study.
Guerra appreciated the warm reception of CUPL. He said FGV is not only one of the most famous think-tanks in South America, but also actively cultivating talent. At present, among the 1,200+ universities in Brazil offering law programs, FGV takes a leading position in both discipline ranking and judicial exams. In addition, FGV is also the first university in Brazilthatsetsup school of business. Guerra noted that South America,particularly Brazil,is a major destination for China’s overseas investment, so intensifying cooperation between CUPL and FGV will facilitate the exchange and cooperation in terms of economy and trade, education and culture. He hoped to see more academic cooperation and exchange between School of Juris Master of CUPL and School of Law of FGV, and betweentheBelt and Road Law Research Center of CUPL and Brazil-China Research Center of FGV in the future.
After the meeting, Guerra and Carvalho were invited to attend the expert forum of School of Juris Master,anddeliveredkeynote speeches respectively titledRule of Law and Regulatory Framework in BrazilandSeeking New Connotations of International Law: Semiotics of Comparative Law.
